TestimonialsMy grandparents came to America in the 1920’s from the Philippines. My grandmother was illiterate because her little fishing village did not have a school and she was born at the turn of the 20th century (approx. 1899). When I was about 10 years old, I asked my paternal grandmother why my dad, uncles and aunt didn’t speak Filipino like she and my grandfather did. She replied to me in a thick accent, ”Well, Alfred, we’re Americans and Americans speak English.” |
