My parents came to this country in 1910 from Italy. One of my father's priorities was to become a citizen as soon as he could, and learn the English language. He carried a pad and pencil to write down words he didn't understand the best he could and then learned the meaning. He carried on his person a small dictionary. In time he learned to write in English and became very good at it. He wrote to me for three years while I was in the service during WWII and each letter was an improvement. My mother, totally on her own, learned to speak and read English.
My wife [also] came here from Italy with her family at the age of 12. She was very upset that she couldn't communicate with the other children. Within 3 months, she was speaking English well enough to be understood. She graduated from high school at the age of 16. When there is a will there is a way.
