My parents demanded that we always speak English in the home so that we become "Americans." They associated the English language with our new country. Italy was the past, and America was the here and now.
My brothers and I became sailors in the US Navy, and were willing to defend our country because our parents had instilled [in us] love of country, and because of the fact that we were Americans who happened to come from Italy and not Italians that happen to live in America. Too often, the new immigrant refuses to become integrated into the American melting pot and demands that this country change to suit their needs.
