My grandparents migrated to the U.S. some time after the first World War .... Busia (“grandma” to you non-Polish speakers) often told me that one of her proudest days was when she learned enough English to converse with her neighbors and trades people! Dziadza (grandpa) was a Drover when he arrived here and eventually became a butcher, so he had to learn English to converse with customers. Both told me that citizenship and learning the English language were two of their proudest accomplishments. I spoke Polish in their home because they were more comfortable with it. But their effort to learn at advanced ages gave me great pride in their accomplishment and was a lesson to me to make strong efforts to overcome life’s challenges!
