Dual immersion - U.S. English Audiocast

October 12, 2009

In recent years, there has been much attention devoted to "dual immersion" classrooms for grade school students, where education takes place in both English and a second language with the hope of making students bilingual.

While no one can deny that bilingualism is an asset, many question the amount of classroom time that is devoted to foreign language instruction rather than focusing on core subjects. Further, the promotion of a “mandatory second language” sends a disturbing message to students and parents who may come from different nations or backgrounds.

In this audio clip, U.S. English Inc. Director of Government Relations Tim Schultz talks about dual immersion programs  and the possible pitfalls associated with their implementation.
