Talking Points On Official English
These truths about official English can be used to promote the issue during a speech at your local civic organization or your local talk radio or public affairs show. Let the audience know that you support legislation currently in Congress (H.R. 997, The English Unity Act of 2007) that would make English the official language of the United States government. Say you support this because:
Official English promotes unity
There are 322 languages spoken in the United States. How are immigrants going to communicate with each other and with native born Americans if we all speak a different language?
Official English is pro-immigrant
A Department of Education study showed that those who do not know English earn only half as much as those who do. Moreover, knowledge of English is essential to the assimilation process.
Official English is pro-American
The 2000 Census revealed that 21.3 million Americans (8 percent of the population) are not proficient in English. This number is a 52 percent increase from 1990, and more than double the 1980 total. More than 5 million of these people were born in the United States. The Census also reports that 4.5 million American households are linguistically isolated, meaning that no one in the household older than age 14 can speak English. If these numbers continue, we will be setting the stage for a nation within a nation.
