English Language Audio Program for Spanish Speakers

English Within Reach, an English Language Audio Program for Spanish speakers, has been conceived to aid the integration of the newcomers into our society and to provide them with the basic means for achieving self-sufficiency. Produced in conjunction with Georgetown University’s School of Languages and Linguistics, this program will provide an excellent alternative form of English language instruction for Hispanic newcomers who are not able to learn English in a formal class setting due to financial or time constraints.

Along with the fundamentals, English Within Reach offers scenarios that are most likely to be encountered by the students in their day-to-day lives. Starting with the first lesson, our listeners will find themselves immersed in daily activities which are likely to become routine for them as they become acquainted with our country and its culture. Responding to an emergency, communicating with government authorities, interviewing for a job, visiting a doctor’s office and opening a bank account are some of the settings that are featured in our audio lessons.

English Within Reach provides easy-to-follow English language instruction with explanations in native speakers’ language. It is an easy and accessible way for Hispanic newcomers to learn our common language. This course could be used as an independent instructional tool or as a supplement to traditional ESL classes and programs.

English Within Reach compact disc sets will be offered free of charge to a variety of constituencies through community and adult education centers. We will also publish the entire course on our web site. Each compact disc set consists of four CDs with three lessons per disc. The Internet version of the program will be made available to anyone interested in downloading separate lessons to their computers or listening to lessons online.
